Recent Increase in Minimum Bodily Injury (BI) Coverage: What It Means for You

 In Personal Injury

As of July 1, 2025, Massachusetts law raises the minimum bodily injury (BI) liability coverage for auto insurance from $20,000 per person ($40,000 for everyone involved in the accident) to $25,000 per person ($50,000 for everyone involved in the accident).

The old minimums were established in 1988. This new increase reflects the rising cost of being involved in an auto accident over the past 40 years.

What does this mean for Massachusetts drivers?

You’ll See Premium Hikes

You don’t have to do anything to adjust your insurance. However, you may have already noticed that your premiums have gone up by about 36% since the law went into effect on July 1, 2025. This price hike reflects the increase in minimum coverage mandated by the new law.

As always, you can call your insurance provider directly to ask about any discounts or other ways to save money while maintaining the minimum BI coverage.

You’ll Have Greater Protection

The greater premium costs reflect greater coverage. If you’re ever in an accident that causes bodily injury, you now have more insurance money to cover your medical bills. This also covers the cost of anyone else you may have hurt in your accident.

You May Still Need More Insurance

BI coverage, as defined by the state, “protects you, or someone you allow to drive your car, from legal liability if you accidentally injure or cause the death of someone else while operating your car.  It only covers losses if the accident occurs in Massachusetts and does not cover the injury or death of a passenger in your car.”

The new law only establishes the minimum BI coverage. You may choose optional additional insurance, such as uninsured motorist coverage or additional medical payments coverage.
