Landmark Alimony Reform Act Signed Into Law

The Alimony Reform Act of 2011 was signed into law by Gov. Deval Patrick in September. It is the hope that this legislation will enact fair and equitable distribution of alimony, including time limits on parties’ obligations to make alimony payments. Judges will now be permitted to consider the facts of each case when deciding upon the alimony orders. Possible Reforms to the Alimony Law on the Horizon

A legislative task force made up of a broad array of Massachusetts legislators, family law attorneys, and interest groups recently filed legislation that would significantly reform alimony law in Massachusetts. Issues such as the duration of alimony and the amount of alimony that a court may order in a divorce case are addressed by this new and comprehensive legislation.
