Firm offers legal resources, personal service - Interview with Scott Clifford

The firm, located at 1165 Washington Street, Suite 2 in Hanover, specializes in a wide-range of law practices. Epstein, Lipsey & Clifford also believe in giving back to the local community. 1. Please give a brief description of your business.
The Law Offices of Epstein, Lipsey & Clifford, P.C. is a full service law firm, concentrating in real estate matters, workers' compensation, social security disability, personal injury law, wills, estates and trusts, education law, veterans' benefits law, domestic relations and all forms of criminal and civil litigation. Our law firm has a diverse staff of attorneys, each with a particular area of concentration. We combine our extensive legal resources with the personalized service and attention that our clients have come to expect.

2. Why did you choose to bring your business to the Hanover/Norwell area?
We felt that the Hanover area provided us with a central location to see our clients when we opened 10 years ago. Our client base at the time extended from Plymouth to Boston.

3. What do you feel sets your business apart from others?
Our dedication to our clients and our constant strive to make their lives better.

4. How did you get involved in this business?
The founding partners of the firm were Bruce Lipsey, Paul Epstein and myself. We all previously worked at another firm together in Quincy. In 2011, when that firm dissolved, we all enjoyed working together and decided to start a new firm so that we could continue working together.

5. What is the best business advice you have received during your career?
The best advice that I have received is always to try and treat your clients in the same manner as you would want to be treated, and always put the clients' best interests ahead of your own personal interests.

6. How has your business been affected by the current economy?
We have been very fortunate that based on the broad areas of our practice we have been able to actually expand during this economic downturn. Because we know that a lot of our clients and others in the community have been greatly affected over the last three years, we have increased our donations to local charities and/or fund-raising efforts for the various charities that we support.

7. Can you give us an inspirational or humorous story about your business?
Who says attorneys cannot roll up their sleeves, get their hands dirty and put in an honest day's work? Approximately 10 years ago, as we were in the process of moving our office from Quincy to Hanover, we discovered that the cleaner had accidentally thrown out a client file. When we discovered the file was missing, we immediately checked the dumpster; unfortunately, it had just been emptied about an hour earlier. We contacted the dumpster company who told us that the truck was en route to the incinerator in Braintree. Paul and I jumped in our car and went to the incinerator. The operators of the incinerator were nice enough to have the truck dump its trash to the side. What a sight to see two attorneys in suits armed with hard hats and shovels about to tackle a pile of trash. Fortunately, the first bag we went through contained the client's file all in one piece.
